Curatorial vision

Noojimo'idizo ↛ she cures herself.

Dance is medicine. For generations, people all around the world have used movement to heal our personal and collective bodies, hearts, minds, and spirits from birth through to death. Over the course of our lives, we learn how to soothe our being and find harmony, peace and joy in our experience. As we experience the sound of our mother’s heartbeat, we are connected to the rhythm of the universe and begin our first dance in the waters of life that surrounds us. Our lives ebb and flow with the ever-changing world. Our hearts grow and give us the strength to re-connect and repair as we go. We witness how healing takes many different forms in the face of irreconcilable harms.

We dance to strengthen our being, to uplift our spirit and celebrate this life. Our world is awakening to the power within us to transform pain and suffering and find our way forward to harmony. In this edition of Matriarchs Uprising, you are invited to witness Noojimo'idizo—she cures herself—of disconnection, dispossession and dis-ease through dance.

I hope you will join us in witnessing the beautiful bounty of live presentations, on-demand films, sharings and conversation from this year’s group of Indigenous women who are nurturing the art of Contemporary Indigenous dance today.

Miigwetch,

Olivia C. Davies
